Chikorita is based on the „chicory”plant, and they added „-ita” in the end to make it sounds „cute”, like they do in Spanish, for example with cat: gato, gatito, I love Chikorita!
I had initially thought alright big guy we know Gen 1 is the pinnacle of pocket monster design but like… i completely see your point, and i see it take place even from Gen 2 onwards, which is odd, cause that’s not where I consider the design fall - I think it’s from 5 onwards but then I too realise that it’s because I grew up with 4 (and suddenly notice it’s a bit like how millennials call my generation a bunch of lazy turds).
i’ve grown used to it over the years, and really like a ton of the previously oddballs of 5 and 6 and 7 and so on
and then eternatus came out and i now want to not alive a game freak employee
